Dr. Mubenga Invited to Speak at United Nations in New York
On Feb 8, a high-level panel “Women in Science Rising: Leadership in Business and Economics” which was co-organized by the Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) and by member states, United Nations agencies, and intergovernmental organizations took place at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.
The theme of the 9th International Day of Women and Girls In Science was to recognize the role of women and girls as agents of change and to mainstream a gender perspective in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. The panel brought together women in science leaders and experts from around the world.
I was honored to respond to the invitation of the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the UN (H.E. Mr. Zenon Mukongo). I advocated for peace, and I presented the advances that STEM DRC Initiative and other institutions have made to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) as founder and president of STEM DRC Initiative.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country that holds the solution to the energy transition and to industry 4.0. The DRC has a young population, it has the largest tropical forest on earth, and it abounds with minerals that are needed for renewable energy technology. Indeed, the DRC contains over 60% of the world reserve of cobalt, it contains coltan, gold, diamond etc. Because of the world greed for these strategic minerals, over ten (10) million Congolese, especially women and girls, are being killed. This war needs to stop.

Dr Mubenga Interviewed by Channel 13 News About EV Driving Range in Cold Weather On January 17, 2024
Channel 13 News Interviewed Dr. Ngalula Sandrine Mubenga, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at the University of Toledo (UT) about why Electric Vehicles (EV’s) lose driving range in freezing weather. The battery chemicals called electrolytes can freeze, reducing the ability of the lithium batteries to pass energy to the car. Energy is also used to warm the batteries. Both issues reduce driving range in freezing weather.

Dr. Ngalula Sandrine Mubenga, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at the University of Toledo (UT) was honored to be the guest of Dr. Michael Toole, Dean of the College of Engineering. The virtual town hall event was moderated by Jennifer Hall, Director of Development at UT and was initially broadcast live on June 23, 2020. Topics discussed included the origin of her passion for electrical engineering, her journey from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the University of Toledo, and her many accomplishments as an inventor, educator, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Dr. Toole is especially interested in the way she recently led an international team of volunteers organizing a COVID-19 response project in the DRC to combat a shortage of ventilators.
The University of Toledo introduced the event by reporting the following:
Dr. Mubenga initially felt powerless about the pandemic but ultimately found a way for people in her native country to build their own breathing machines using equipment and materials accessible to them. Dr. Mubenga will share how she organized a team and devised a truly innovative plan to save lives amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Some of the team members are recipients of STEM scholarships awarded by Dr. Mubenga’s non-profit organization, the STEM DRC Initiative, which funded 60 Scholarships in the Congo in the last academic year (UT, 2020)..
